Prompt 4: Fanwork Recommendations

As the sunshine_challenge continues, we invite everyone to share with others the fanfics, fanart, fanvids, cosplays … anything and everything fannish that you love and wish to share! Remember that there is no official deadline, so feel free to join in at any time or go back and do any prompts you've missed!



This prompt may seem pretty self-explanatory, and it may well be, but please consider the following when collecting fanworks to share with us all:

1. Fanworks in this context can mean anything a fan has spent time creating for their beloved fandoms (.gifs and amv’s and cosplay and that tile you painted in your apartment bathroom to look like that fannish thing … don’t let traditional views of what constitutes a fanwork limit you here).

2. You do not need to be a content creator to share fanworks. I’ve seen it mentioned in various places that some people don’t feel as much a part of fandom as those who create content, but fandom exists for ALL fans. Many of us are here to enjoy and spread love and this is your time to shine. We want to see what you’ve found over the years!

3. That said, if you are a creator, then also consider taking this opportunity to self-promote. It can feel awkward for many of us to share our own fanworks and shine lights on them, and if you are one of those folks, please consider this your nudge to step on the podium and be proud of the works you’ve labored over.





Once you’ve finished sharing what you love, leave a comment to this post saying you’ve done it! Include a link to your pages if you feel comfortable doing so. Let everyone know whether you are "Ready for visitors!" or "Lurking for fandom fun".

Most importantly, please check through the comments and go visit new journals, comment on their shiny posts, and maybe make a new friend or two. We encourage everyone to aim to comment on two new journals if they are able (of course, you are welcome to do more!). ♥

It's all shameless self reccs. I've been struggling with getting some of my stuff actually seen, so I figured I'd try.

I made three four recommendations: a wonderful cosplaying fan's Instagram, a lovely moodboard another fan made for one of my fics which doubles as a sideways self-rec, and then a straight-up self-rec for my Muppets fanfic because I'm vain enough to think that the world needs to read about Muppets at a funeral. EDIT: and then I decided to include artwork too.

Yeah, getting stuff seen can be hard. Some of my favorite works barely have any hits and then something I banged out during the final season of a popular show struck a chord due to timing and got ten times the hits of something I spent years polishing. And it really wasn't good because I wrote it so quickly and I'm torn between this urge to delete it because it wasn't good and the vanity of having more hits on it than my average.

A bunch of my work got effectively hidden because I was out of the loop. I am a fandom old. I've troubleshot problems for other people. I asked why things where being so odd in places where people 100% knew what the problem was, but just gave me bs answers about how I should only write to please myself. It's hard to get over the bad feeling. That hasn't been my only productivity problem, but it's definitely one.

Definitely going to check out those VLD recs! I read very cautiously in that fandom, but there are some really talented writers over there.

Unfortunately, I have also found that VLD fandom requires a curated experience. Those recs live in my AO3 bookmarks and I have reread each of them a few times already.
