As the sunshine_challenge draws near, we invite everyone to take a look around their journals and take care of any tidying they might wish to complete before having new visitors next month. Of course, there is no right or wrong way to keep your journal. The possibilities are nearly endless and you can customize your space as you see fit.

As you peruse this checklist, please feel free to mark each item as being Up to Date, In Progress, or Not Applicable to your journals.

Many of us may benefit from the friendly nudge to neaten our spaces, but if you are already up to date, then please still use this post as a place to say hello and investigate new-to-you journals ... you may even have additional tips to share!

Most of you have seen our list of Tips and Ideas for Organizing Online Spaces before. If you haven’t seen it, or if you would like see it again, please do follow the link as there are several helpful items to consider as you tidy.

There have been some developments in fannish and other artistic online spaces more recently that may deserve your consideration as well. With the rise of things like AI tools and Am*z*n, the number of fanworks and original works that are being stolen has increased and evolved in new ways. From bots downloading fan novels/original works from AO3 to self-publish on Am*z*n (with stolen art on the cover) to users feeding works into chat programs to finish WIPs or rework stories they felt should have ended differently … it could be time to consider how you organize your works online.

Whether you choose to lock your works to members only, remove them from various platforms, adjust/remove blanket permissions that you may have previously given: there is no right or wrong way to feel about any of this. It’s simply something to be aware of and do more research on if you so wish. ♥

(I'm totally fine with people discussing these things below, but as it's a group space, please refrain from ranting or dumping lots of negative energies in the comments.)

Added a "do not feed my fic into AI" to my AO3, locked down my fic, and am making a Dreamwidth back up (I'm up to 2007!). So I guess I'm ready for visitors?

Updated my transformative works policy, although I seriously doubt that's going to do any good where AI is considered. Is this really getting to be a thing? I mean, we can't make money off of FAN works, so why the heck should they?! Just wondering how they get away with it, when we certainly can't!

From what I understand, it's about doing it on a scale where sales get made faster than takedowns occur (especially as they aren't marketed as fanworks on the selling platforms). Updated transformative work policies may help prevent actual users from manually feeding fics to chat programs: there are active conversations over at tumblr now where the younger fans admit to using chap programs to rewrite fics as a fun past-time who are being called out for it. Having it explicitly in your profiles may make them take pause? Unfortunately, all of this requires internet folks to act in good faith, which we know not everyone does. Hopefully you find a balance that works for you!

My journal's ready enough, I think. My profile is changed but now includes a sort of description of content. I checked over my fic account and included a negative on AI programs. (This reminds me I need to add that to my other fic accounts as well.)

I'm ready for visitors, there's more public posts than normal this time with doing fannish 50 but those will likely be locked towards the end of the year.

I need to update my transformative works policy, I already locked my AO3 it was only for back up purposes anyway and while I started to back up to Squidge World last year I stopped after a few weeks with changing jobs and since then it's been trying to find the time even to do just one week or one month.

I always post all of my fic and art to alittleimprobable before it's available anywhere else, I set the community up in 2013(ish) and it took me a few months just to get almost 12 years worth of content reposted at the time.

Added a bit about AI/LLM to my transformative works policy. Dunno how much of a deterrent it'll be but I guess it's better than nothing. All my fic is locked (except 1 fic that I co-wrote with somebody) so no changes there.

Updated my profile too. Ready for visitors :)

Yeah, these measures only mean so much and depend on internet folks operating in good faith. As long as folks are aware of the new trends and take what measures make them more comfortable, you know?

i don't know if i think i'm fully tidy, but it's tidy enough for guests i think :D i did add a sticky/intro post finally, because this was the nudge i needed to do so!

i recently added a line to my permission statement on my ao3 profile to say 'don't use AI on my fics' because i've seen a few isolated anecdotes of people feeding fic to chatgpt or similar for fun and not realizing the reprecussions of doing so. so i feel like even though no one scraping ao3 for llm data will read my profile, maybe perhaps possibly someone who might just be a person messing around on chatgpt will see it and it will have some affect that way. (i can hope, anyway)

I heard about this as well :') I like how you phrased your statement and will take inspiration! Just saying "use" is simpler to understand for people who might not realise "just messing around" also has an impact.

I love the thorough list of tips, that was really helpful!! I updated my blanket statement (good point!!), and dusted off the profile of my fic comm backup on Dreamwidth as well since it had become a little bit out of date. Side-bar of main journal also updated with a link to it!

I believe I am READY FOR VISITORS! :D Hoping I get to participate a little bit more than last year this time, I'm looking forward to it!!

I'm planning to change the theme of my profiles on Tumblr, DW, LJ and IS. I'm also orchestrating changing the DW bio code and added links to my other profiles. All of my fics are private, but I have not yet disclosed that I do not endorse AI nor do I authorize my creation to feed one. For now I'm taking it easy when it comes to organizing everything.
